What is First Aid
First Aid is the initial help or care given to a casualty who is either injured or become ill, up until the time that the Emergency Services arrive. Often this will be administered by a trained First Aider who has been called to the scene.
The knowledge and potentially lifesaving skills that the First Aider may have to deliver, can and do save many hundreds of lives each year. These skills are vital though not difficult to learn.
First Aid in the workplace:
There are literally thousands of work related accidents/injuries each year in the UK, both minor and major. Some fatal.
Under current legislation Health & Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981 “Require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. These Regulations apply to all workplaces including those with less than five employees and to the self-employed.” This includes the need to have Trained First Aiders.
